When Choosing a Solar Installer, Focus on Service

Investing in a solar system is a smart choice. But choosing the right solar installer with a good track record dedicated to service can be an even more important one.

It may comfort you to know that solar panels and their associated components are designed to last for decades. But the journey to energy independence doesn’t end with the installation. Just like other important components of your home—such as your furnace, flooring, or driveway—a proper solar installation also requires a skilled technician to monitor, inspect, and service the equipment over time.

Focus on Customer Service

A solar company with a long track record and positive reputation will have  easy-to-reach service reps that are eager to make sure your project is successful, along with skilled installers available to perform routine maintenance checks to identify and address any issues before they escalate. When shopping for a solar installer, be sure to investigate their dedication to service and making sure that their customers can stay happy for the full life of their solar panels.

Plan for a Long-Term Relationship

Consider what might happen if you have an issue with your panels 5, 10, or 20 years in the future. Maybe you will have sold your home by then. Make sure you trust that your solar installer will still be around during that time to help you, or the future owner of your home, with any questions or problems that may arise. When selling a home, panels that were installed by a known and reputable installer will be seen as an asset, not a liability.

Cost Savings and Peace of Mind

Exterior mounted equipment that is exposed to the elements can go through a lot. Routine and proactive maintenance can identify minor issues that, if left unattended, could escalate into major problems.  By addressing any concerns with your system promptly—whether from nesting mice or mounts which have rattled loose due to strong storms—you can save money and enjoy peace of mind knowing that your solar investment is well-protected.

Performance Optimization

The efficiency of solar systems can be influenced by various factors, such as dirt, dust, shading, or equipment malfunctions. If your solar system is not adequately maintained, it may not generate as much electricity as it should. A proficient installer will closely monitor your system’s performance and make necessary adjustments to optimize energy production. This proactive approach ensures you get the most out of your solar investment by consistently generating electricity at peak capacity.

Software and Technology Updates

Service technicians will also help ensure you are running the most current and stable versions of monitoring software, give you tips on how to best use it, and can help keep the firmware (the internal software that helps run your equipment) updated on your equipment. In addition, as technology continues to improve, there may be some “no-brainer” upgrades to your system further down the line that a technician can recommend.

Safety Should Be a Priority

Solar installations involve high voltage electrical components that have the potential  to cause electrical shocks, fires, or other hazardous situations—today or in the future. Regular maintenance carried out by a qualified installer helps ensure that your solar system remains safe for you and your home despite any problems that could arise from wear and tear or weathering.

Warranty Compliance

Many solar panel manufacturers offer warranties that stipulate regular maintenance and professional servicing as requirements for upholding warranty coverage. Neglecting maintenance or opting for an inexperienced installer that may not be around five or ten years from now could result in voiding these warranties. In such cases, you might find yourself shouldering the full cost of any unexpected repairs or replacements.

Choosing an installer with a focus on—and a proven track record with—service will be key to enjoying your solar installation for years to come. Check out our infographic on what to look for when choosing a solar installer to learn more.
