Can Solar Energy Save the Planet?

Although the debate over whether global warming is real is all but over, the question remains what, if anything, can we do to reverse the effects and save the planet? Though there are many best practices for reducing our individual carbon footprint, solar energy might be the single most significant change that most Americans can make to help save our planet, and it’s pretty easy.

How solar can help

As a clean, endlessly renewable energy source, solar can significantly impact our planet by reducing our use of fossil fuels, helping to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality and helping to conserve and preserve our water.

Home improvement

For most Americans, our single most significant source of pollution comes from our homes. Most American homes are heated and cooled by power produced from fossil fuels. It is estimated that residential energy use accounts for roughly 20 percent of greenhouse emissions in the United States. Based on this estimate, it’s evident that nothing can significantly impact our individual carbon footprint as shifting the source of home energy away from fossil fuels to clean and renewable solar.

Clean transportation

According to data collected from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the largest contributor of fossil fuels-related carbon dioxide emissions come from petroleum consumption via transportation. Fortunately, more and more consumers and businesses are switching from petroleum-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EV). Although this is a good thing, the true benefit of switching to an EV isn’t accomplished unless the source of the fuel used to charge those vehicles’ batteries is a clean and renewable energy source. Fortunately, solar and EVs are a near perfect pairing for most individuals and businesses looking to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.

Although it’s hard to say that solar can save the planet, it sure can go a long way to help limit our dependence on fossil fuels and impact on the environment.
