How to Prepare for Your Solar Installer Search

So you’ve decided you’re ready to go solar. Now it’s just a matter of wading through the plethora of solar companies, some that seem to have popped up overnight. Here’s a few tips to keep you sane during your search.

Learn just enough

You don’t need to become an expert in solar technology, but it’s helpful to know the basics of how solar technology works and some of the basic components involved before beginning your search for an installer. This will help you ask better questions during your search and ensure less reputable installers don’t take advantage of you.

Start local

While there are a number of nationwide solar installers which claim to have a broad coverage across the United States, many use subcontractors for the bulk of their work, and they often don’t have experience working with your locality, which can bring a number of problems throughout entire process—whether it’s unfamiliarity with permitting and local conditions or inefficient design of the system.

Get multiple quotes

Contact several reputable solar installers to provide you with quotes. Having multiple quotes allows you to compare costs, equipment options, and services offered by different companies. You may see a wide variety of prices and this is a good opportunity to inquire about the differences. It’s a vital step in finding the best fit for your needs and budget and making sure that you are truly comparing apples to apples.

Check credentials

Ensure that the solar installer you choose holds the necessary credentials, such as licenses, certifications, and insurance. Verify their qualifications to perform solar installations in your area. To gauge their reputation and customer satisfaction, read online reviews and ask for references from past customers. Experience matters in the solar industry. Seasoned professionals are more likely to provide high-quality workmanship and efficient installations. If they’ve been around for over ten years, there’s a great chance they will be around for ten, twenty, or thirty years more to help keep your solar installation operating efficiently for years to come.

Assess equipment and technology

You don’t need to be an expert on solar brands, equipment, or technology, but you should ask good questions of your potential installer to ensure they are using reputable brands known for their reliability and long warranties. Ensure that the solar panels, inverters, and the installation work itself come with comprehensive warranties. Understand the terms and conditions of these warranties, including what is covered and for how long. This ensures you’re protected in case of unexpected issues. The choice of equipment can significantly impact your system’s performance and longevity.

Don’t fall for high-pressure tactics

With the rising popularity of solar and a wider availability of solar panels of varying quality over the past few years, there’s no shortage of fly-by-night solar installers that are popping up and canvassing neighborhoods looking for a quick buck. But good work from reputable and experienced installers will sell itself. Don’t fall for high-pressure tactics from door-to-door salesmen. No matter how confident a salesperson may sound about their company, be sure to get second opinions and dive deeper to see exactly the kind of company they are.

Understand the installation process

Ask the installer to provide a detailed explanation of the entire installation process. Understand the timelines, permitting requirements, and any potential disruptions to your daily routine. Knowing what to expect will help you prepare accordingly. This step will also give you a good idea of how your installer handles customer service. Don’t hesitate to ask the installer any questions or express concerns you may have. Communicating clearly and keeping you happy during the entire process is their job. A good installer will earn your trust by being clear and precise about how the entire process works.

Take your time to research, compare options, and ask questions. Choosing the right installer now can save you from headaches and hassles for years to come.
